Alcohol Addiction & Suicide

Alcohol addiction is linked to the development of depression. While those with depression are more inclined to abuse alcohol and other substances. As these conditions are interconnected and interchangeably related, the risk of suicide is increased.

Everyone knows that suicide is related to people with mental illness. However, a recent study has found that suicide and alcohol abuse is linked to one another.

Suicide Statistics:

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that 39,000 in the U.S. are dying every year due to suicide. In a clearer representation, 108 suicides are happening everyday.

The Center for Disease and Prevention Center (CDC) released a record that suicide is the 10th leading cause of deaths in the U.S. Addicts are 6 times more vulnerable to commit suicide.

Study:

A new study has found, although although depression and mental illness are the top leading cause of suicide, alcohol addiction and drug addiction ranked the second. A new research has revealed that alcoholism is the strongest triggering factor for suicide and not mental illness.

While Addiction to substances increases the risk of committing suicide, studies have found that alcohol poisoning is one of the methods used by people to take their own life. The National Alliance on Mental Illness revealed that 1 in 3 people who committed suicide were under the influence of alcohol or were high on drugs.

Alcoholism and Suicide:

Alcohol addiction increases the risk of suicide more than five times than those who are not alcoholics. Researchers have found that the link between alcoholism and suicide is roughly 50 percent.

Alcohol intoxication and withdrawal make people more impulsive to take their own lives. Without asking for help when down, people risk of taking their life to get rid of their problems. Alcohol increases implusivity and reduces inhibitions.

People who have alcoholism tend to have more exposure to situations that can have a detrimental impact on the mental health. These events include money issues, joblessness, injuries, illness, assaults, violence, prostitution and drug overdoses.

Binge Drinking and Suicide among Teens:

There is a rising trend of suicide and binge drinking among the teenagers. Teens who are into binge drinking are four times more likely to take their own life. This is because teens who engaged in drinking are facing stressful events.

People who have taken their life have high levels of alcohol in their blood. Alcohol consumption is always associated with one’s suicidal tendencies. Although a person may be already contemplating on suicide, being intoxicated with alcohol makes a person have a mindset of pursuing the act.

At present, researchers are looking into treatments that can treat people with alcohol addiction and are suicidal. Alcoholism should be treated the earliest possible time.

Alcohol abuse and mental illness are co-occuring conditions. Treating only the mental disorder and not alcoholism only leads to the same problem.
